MARVIN SMITH ODLE Marvin passed away on September 16, 2014 at the VA Hospital in Loma Linda, Ca. He was born on May 14th, 1925 in Piqua, OH to George Benjamin Odle and Ella Gertrude Smith. He was the youngest of 12 children and the only male child to survive to adulthood. Marvin grew up in western Ohio before joining the Aviation Cadet program of the Army Air Corps in 1943 at the age of 18. Upon receiving his wings, he flew 34 bombing missions in B-25s over northern Italy. He married Minnie Rachel McLemore on September 1, 1949 in Mobile, Al. During his 20 years of military service he was stationed in the Southeastern US, Alaska and England and received the Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal before retiring as a Command Pilot at the rank of Major in 1963. After leaving the military he attended the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS where he received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in political science. The Odles moved to then Sunnymead, Ca. in 1967 where Marvin began teaching history and government at Moreno Valley High School, He also founded the Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program that year, becoming the 26th AFJROTC program in California. Marvin retired from teaching in 1982 and he and Rachel moved to Lucedale, MS to live on a farm so he could pursue his dream of raising cattle. He remained a gentleman farmer until Rachel's passing after 59 years of marriage in August of 2007. He returned to Moreno Valley in September of 2007 to be near his sons and their families. Marvin is survived by his sons Gary Odle of Minneapolis, MN, Roger Odle of Redondo Beach, Ca; Gregory Odle of Loma Linda, Ca; and David Odle of Riverside, Ca, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Services will be held at CrossWinds Church, 29263 Ironwood Avenue, Moreno Valley, Ca. 92555 at 11:00am on October 9th. Graveside service will follow at Riverside National Cemetery at 2:15pm.
